Merry Christmas

We know it’s a little early but as this is our last newsletter before Christmas we thought we would take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone/everydog at South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue.

News

It has been a busy few months, the clocks going back always results in a sudden rush of dogs needing new homes, walking dogs in the dark can be the final straw for people already contemplating giving up a dog.  It’s the worst time for us too as caring for the dogs in kennels seems harder in winter and there are hardly any fundraising opportunities  (& the opportunities we do have are much colder and less fun too).  If we are feeling down we just think of the dogs and it spurs us on.  There have been a steady stream of dogs finding new homes but Arthur, Max and of course Freddie still remain.  We continue to believe that one day Arthur and Max will find their forever homes and just hope that it is sooner rather than later as neither are getting any younger.

In the winter we have very few opportunities to attend events and raise funds, so please try if you can to attend one of our remaining events, we need all the support we can get (this does not necessarily mean donating money) .  If you can’t attend anything else please try and attend our ever popular "KENNELS OPEN DAY" which will take place on SUNDAY 13th DECEMBER 2009 11-2pm. The open day is a great chance to meet the Springers currently in care and if you have one of our Springers it gives us a chance to see how they are getting on.   You can enjoy a cuppa and a mince pie plus there will be a couple of stalls and a special Santa's box should you wish to bring a gift for those Springers who may not get to enjoy a warm fireside this Christmas.

We would also like it if you could attend our New Year Stroll on January 3rd, it will give you a chance to work off some of those Christmas calories and give the dogs at kennels a new and interesting walk as their Christmas treat.  We will be meeting at kennels at 10.30am so please join us (your dogs are welcome too).

Bereavements

Thankfully there aren’t as many bereavements to mention as in the last newsletter, but even one is too many and our thoughts are with the families of Teal Rutheford and Connie “Cough Drop” Stirling.

Our thoughts are also with the family and friends of Mr Jeffrey Wright who died recently.  We would also like to thank these same family and friends who kindly donated a total of £300 in lieu of flowers at his funeral.

This is his gorgeous dog Coco (on the right) and an equally gorgeous friend.

The Night Before Christmas

'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every kennel is full, we are lost but not found.
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care.

They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"come here, Max and Arthur, come fetch your new ball!"
But now we just sit here and think of the days.....
we were treated so fondly, we had baby ways.

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew,
now we're no longer young, and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like trash,
they reacted so quickly, why were they so rash?

We "jump on the children", "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", "climb over the wall."
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the error they made.

If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too.
We were left in back yard, or worse, left to roam...
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.

They dropped us off here and they kissed us goodbye....
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confused and alone....
in kennels with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat.
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer....
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads....
of a home filled with love and our own cosy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears,
our friends filled with emptiness, worry and fears.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at your inn,
please could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year,
can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Please make a donation to pay for the heat....
and help us get something special to eat.
The people that care for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people give.

The Apprentice

Whilst S.Y.E.S.S.R continues to offer the best possible services to the Springer Spaniel and their needs we need more help.  The current welfare team are becoming old, grey and at times very stressed.  We therefore are seeking apprentice Welfare Offices, unfortuantly unlike Alan Sugar's these vacancies are unpaid.  Whilst the internet services, the sales dept, newsletter, governance and fundraising are all in very capable hands, we need some special people to get involved in dog handling, welfare and re-homing.

Would you be a person who loves the breed and enjoys their physical company?  Are you fit and strong enough to walk a puller?  Are you a ball thrower?  Could you patiently groom a matted one?   Can you handle aggression safely and with confidence and still see that the dog within has needs?  Could you give confidence to those shy and abused ones?  Could you pick up a completely strange, often stressed dog from a stray kennels?  Are you able to nurse and tend a sick, injured or post op dog?

We have a very much appreciated, small team of volunteer walkers but the role of the welfare officers goes beyond this.  If S.Y.E.S.S.R is to continue to improve its service and continue into the future your help could be vital.

Job Description

Unpaid (dogs body), mullti tasks (cleaning, poo-pick up), grooming, nursing, behavioural work, pick-up’s, vets visits, etc etc.

Mostly outdoors, cold, wet, windy or hot (nearly always smelly!), Sometimes risky, there is a slight chance you could get bitten! (we are really selling it to you aren’t we!)

Person Specification

Male or female, strong, fit, a driver, under 40 preferably, live within 30 minutes of kennels (S36).  Able to give time most days to some aspect of dog work.  Passionate about giving something back to a wonderful breed.

If you’d like to know more please email, phone or call in at the kennels.

Please note….. Some petrol expenses may be available but the only other reward will be a lick, a wag or a loving backward glance as a Springer finds a new home and you say goodbye to a friend.

Doggie Updates - Ben & Angel

Its always more difficult to find homes for pairs of dogs so it was a happy day when Ben & Angel went off to their new home and lovely to find out that they are getting on well (despite the odd teething troubles)

Hi,

I thought you might appreciate a catch up on how Ben and Angel are getting along - it has been a year now since that rainy day when I came to pick them up for a trial weekend. We have had many experiences, some of which I will share with you now. The most alarming development was when Ben suddenly realised he could swim!  Of course he was on a mission chasing Ducks! Amazingly he swam to the middle of the reservoir on his maiden voyage with no thought as to how he would have got back. At one point I thought he was going all the way across which would have been a challenge for me.  So for one week every day he was in up to his neck and there was no doubt his swimming technique did improve. He gave it up eventually as there was little reward for him and now he walks straight passed the ducks on the waters edge.

Ben has also given up on the Hens after killing 2, but we still daren’t trust him in the garden with them.   The Pheasants and the Partridge are his weakness he just can't help himself. His sister on the other hand does her best to flush the bird but has no interest in them even if they were sitting next to her. She has decided not to take up swimming but does now venture in for a cool and a drink. She remains possessive about anything when the mood takes her and poor Ben doesn't know when he's doing right from wrong.

Anyway a couple of snaps are attached - hope you like the one where I caught Ben having a plant pot moment for some bizarre reason  it did make us laugh.

Keep up your Stirling efforts,

Regards
Angela

Spotlight on Fosterers

In our next few newsletters we will be highlighting the invaluable work done by some of our long term fosters.  Obviously we value everyone who gives a home to one of our dogs but there are a few people out there who have given homes to dogs that for varying reasons, most people wouldn’t even consider.  One of these people is;

Deborah Lomas

A very young Deborah first visited rescue at our Rainbow Kennels base in August 1995, she and Bonnie her terrier were looking for a companion.  Whilst there she met “Boston”, Boston a small liver and white dog had been living in  a porch…. Oops sorry a Porche!!!!  He suffered from dreadful agoraphobia and getting him outside was a panic-filled trauma.  “I’ll give him a go” said Deborah and give him a go she certainly did.  He was never truly normal but had a happy life with Deborah.

Soon after his death she visited Dot at the Hollows and came back with Clyde the untouchable!!  Some of you will have met Clyde who is now a sociable, friendly boy—another success for the mad dog woman!  Soon on a visit to our current home at Cliffe Kennels she took another oddbod called “Chance”.  Chance was a beautiful looking but temperamental character with a very strong will, especially around cars.  Once home he wouldn’t leave the car and so stayed there until he was good and ready (about three days if we remember correctly!!)  But yet again Deborah won the battle.

Next came Buddy, lots of you may remember Buddy, some even gave him a chance, but true to form a few hours after entering a new home, Buddy showed his teeth….. Let out his famous growl…...and then came quickly back to kennels!  Then he met his match….Enter Superdeborah!  She now had three problem boys and Bonnie all living in harmony,.  Well most of the time!

Sadly both Chance and Bonnie died earlier this year so when Debra came to kennels and heard about “The Beast of Bolton” aka “Cujo” or “Benji”   Benjie is an old 12+ grumpy old boy, bereaved and with a history of being the boss.  In kennels he proved hard work to say the least and gave us and the kennel staff hell.  Even giving him the most basic care proved difficult (& quite dangerous!).  Unfortunately for Debra his saving grace was that he got on famously with Buddy so……..”I’ll give him a go!”

She did and proved just how brave and smart you have to be with a challenging dog.  We even sent him off to the vets for a full health MOT, half hoping that there was possibly a health reason for which he should be given sleep but Uncle Alan the vet said “This dog will live FOREVER”.  So out came the paddling pool and the shears and low and behold Mr Cujo, Beast of Bolton turned into Mr Benjamin Kool.

To say Debra has our thanks and admiration is the understatement of the Century .  In our opinion she could teach Ceasar Milan a few things, she’s braver than most men and smart enough to outwit the cleverest “bad boy”.  Very few people will take on these older challenging dogs, meaning that staying in kennels or euthanasia are their only option but Debra and her pack keep doing it, and long may she continue to do so!  In return she has had the unique bond with and love of , Boston, Clyde, Chance, Buddy and Benjie (and a few others).  So Debra, thank you from them for the gift of a home and for keeping your sense of humour throughout.

A final quote re Benji “I did have a bit of a scare when on day two he joined me in the shower…...I remembered you said he guards the doorway……”

To find out the outcome you have to ask Debra

Next time we’ll feature Linda & Barry Young & their golden oldies.

and Lily was very affectionate and people orientated which we liked.  The decision was made, for better of for worse!  We brought Lily home a couple of days later and as soon as we opened the door she made a beeline for the settee and plonked her self right in the middle of it!  As she explored upstairs later she took up residence in the middle of our bed!  Lily is a bit like a wriggly piglet when she doesn’t want to do something and has an endearing way of belly flopping to the floor and refusing to move!  At first Charlie pestered her quite a lot and when she had had enough she belly flopped.  Charlie was very bemused and thought he had broken his new toy!  He would gently prod her with his paw to see if she was OK then walk off with a big sigh when she wouldn’t budge!

She is mainly white with a big brown spot on her back which looks just like and on/off button!  Two weeks on and we set off on holiday with both dogs snuggled on a quilt in the boot.  We were headed for Kielder forest.  On arrival both dogs were soon racing around exploring forest tracks and sniffing out the abundance of rabbits, squirrels and birds.  We soon observed that when Charlie returned from a walk he was always caked in mud and wet through whilst Lily remained clean, dry and white!  We then moved on to the Northumberland coast.  Charlie loved it there last year and became a real surf dude.  This year was no different; he was soon riding the waves chasing his beloved tennis ball.  Lily had obviously not seen the sea before and proceeded to take a big drink, which she spat out in disgust.  She was always careful not to get her paws wet in the waves and preferred digging in the sand!

Lily didn’t bother with toys when she arrived and looked disdainfully at Charlie as he ran around chasing balls and anything he could get his paws on.  One day when she had had enough of him she waited until Charlie wasn’t looking and took his ball.  She then proceeded to look behind all the cupboards for somewhere to hide it!  Gradually she has started playing with the toys but is still a bit nonplussed by the squeaky variety.  Her inner puppy is certainly coming out!  Back home they have settled into being good friends and love racing around the fields together with ears flapping in the wind.

NEWGold Jewellry

This is something we are only just considering so we don’t really know how profitable it will be yet.  You may have noticed the recent adverts for getting cash for your unwanted gold jewellery.  Obviously we aren’t asking you to donate precious and valuable items but we thought that many of you may have odd little bits (odd earrings, broken chains etc) that aren’t worth you sending in on their own but if you sent to us we could send in in one batch and perhaps make a few pounds.  You can send them to us or bring them to any of our events. .

Gift Aid

Signing up for gift aid is a great way to get the tax man to give money to our fantastic Springers.  If you currently pay tax you can gift aid any donations which means that for every £1 you donate the charity will receive an additional 28p without any additional cost to you.

Legacy

For a gift that lasts beyond your lifetime why not make a pledge to leave us a gift in your will.  If you are making a will it is also worth thinking about what will happen to your dogs/pets should you no longer be there to care for them and making appropriate provisions to ensure that they will continue to receive the love and care that you would want them to have.

Special Supporter Scheme

For a minimum donation of £1 per month (set up on standing order) you can join our Special Supporter Scheme, As a special supporter you will receive a certificate of support, a photograph of your chosen dog(s), entry in our annual supporters draw and a Christmas card from your chosen dog(s).  Give us a call for more information

Recycling

We can now raise funds by recycling mobile phones and ink cartridges, get in touch to find out more.  Or bring them along to one of our events.  Due to the current prices for aluminium it is no longer cost effective for us to recycle aluminium cans etc as it costs us more in petrol to take them than we actually get.  As soon as this changes we will let you know.

Springerball - Win Money And Support Us Too!

Springerball is a great way to raise funds whilst giving you a chance to win cash too.  There are still a few numbers available so why not give it a try.  It would be great if we could get all the numbers allocated.

It's very simple, you pay £5 per month and are allocated a number from 1 – 49. On the first
Saturday of each month whichever bonus ball is drawn in the National Lottery main lotto draw then the person who has been allocated that number wins £50, the remaining funds will go direct to our special dogs, helping to ensure that receive the care they deserve. Simply complete the enclosed bank mandate form and return it to your bank/us.

Next month the winner could be you!

RAISE FUNDS FOR SYESSR WHEN YOU SHOP ONLINE

Easyfundraising is a fantastic new website where you can raise funds for South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue just by shopping online with over 400 top retailers and it is at no cost to you!  In fact in many cases you get a better deal than if you actually went into the shop to purchase the item.

Whether you are looking for insurance, holidays, gifts, health and beauty, electronics, entertainment, wine, sport, motoring,flowers, finance, internet services, or anything else, there is a way you can help us. The way it works is:  Log on to;

www.easyfundraising.org.uk/syessr.

Complete the simple one page registration electing SYESSR as your nominated charity.  SYESSR will then receive a donation from any purchases you make when using the site

It seems generous, but when you buy online costs are much lower and retailers are more than willing to help good causes when new 'online' customers are introduced to them via this website.

The donation amount varies depending upon the retailer, but is between 1% and 15% and is AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU !  For example, spend £25 with WH Smith and 3.5% will be donated. You will have raised £0.88, at no extra cost to your purchase. Make any purchase from Woolworths and 2.5% will be donated. Insure your car with The AA and raise £30.00, or purchase a mobile phone from Vodafone and earn £29.00, and so on.  The list is endless..

PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE THE EASY FUNDRAISING SITE EACH TIME YOU MAKE A PURCHASE (WHY NOT MAKE IT YOUR HOME PAGE) —THE PATTERN SHOWS THAT MANY PEOPLE USE IT INITIALLY BUT THEN FORGET ABOUT IT WHICH MEANS WE ARE THEN MISSING OUT ON THESE MUCH NEEDED FUNDS.

Please note that your purchases will be dealt with directly by the retailer.   To ensure that the retailers security is maintained neither SYESSR or Easyfundraising have access to the information you submit.

You can also help us raise money by just searching on the web, to find out more just log on to www.easysearch.org.uk.  We get around a penny for each search, it doesn’t sound much but it soon adds up.
