Smudger Update

PhotobucketJust a short report to let his many admirers know how Smudger is getting on.

Originally Smudgers little house was built as a holiday home for him to have a change of scene and a bit more quality of life.  Once he arrived, Smudger made it clear he was happy as Larry and wanted to stay. He bonded straight away with Whizz (our three year old) they are now a real double act, busy as bees together all day.

Smudger loves gardening, being driven about in Pudsey's smelliest Ford Fiesta and going for a walk somewhere nice. We don't need an extender, where Whizz goes Smudge follows.

Smudge tends to use his kennel as just a bedroom, he has another bed in the garage for rainy days. After , initially being quite suspicious, he now loves to have his undercarriage blow dried with a hairdryer.   Another favourite pastime is being cuddled. We won't get into bed unless we have had loads of fuss. At bed time we sit on the edge of his kennel and tell him there are lots of homeless people who would love a cosy little house like his.

Surprisingly it has not been a problem having one dog living in and the other out. After a busy day Smudger has usually gone and layed in his bed while Whizz is still hunting birds and frogs in the garden.

Although Smudger is leading a more active life there has not been any improvement in his incontinence. This Photobucketmeans if we do get invited to stay anywhere and for holidays Smudger goes back to Cliffe to visit his old friends. We are grateful to the people who sponsor Smudger thus contributing to the cost of his kennel fees and medical expenses. We have kept his little house heated through Winter so that if he wets the bed he is still warm.

I wish all the people who have supported Smudge could see him dashing through the bluebell woods or sunbathing on the patio, the little chap brings us a lot of joy.

Mitzi Update

This update from the Holman family gave us cause to shed a tear and also smile.

Just to let you know that our wonderful springer ‘Mumbling Mack’ Holman had to be put to sleep on the 4th April. Mack never really picked up after the loss of his friend Tasha (the Samoyed) last year, and finally succumbed to liver failure. We loved him to bits and I can’t tell you how much we miss him.

As you know, in an attempt to ‘perk Mack up a bit,’ we adopted the manic Mitzy, (who came from Aberystwyth). Mitzy has settled in nicely. She was quite timid at first, apart from an obsession with her toys, but Mack soon taught her the ways of the spaniel. (ie Sitting and looking longingly as you eat your tea, and if that fails, put your chin on your owners knee and look sad, stand by the kitchen work surfaces in case any eatables land on the floor, where the most comfortable places to sleep are ie anywhere but the floor, etc).

PhotobucketMitzy now rules the roost, and keeps trying to play with the cat, who is not impressed. Our tortoise has just come out of hibernation, and Mitzy cannot understand why it does not like being flipped over, and refuses to play with her! Her only down side is that she has an obsession for ‘toys’ – she will play ‘throw this for me’ for hours (and I mean hours!!. Even if we take her a walk she has no interaction with the environment, just her stick or ball, or if you refuse to play, a stone, a leaf anything!

She is really sweet, and lovely nature – another success story for SYESSR.

Regards,
Gail Holman
